Learn more about the TeacherPrints terminology.

An extended, uninterrupted Statement by a Single Speaker.

A short(er) Statement by one Speaker in between Statements by another.

An instructional unit on a particular topic presented by a teacher to students on a specific day.

An individual component of a TeacherPrint, that pertains to a specific element of the analysis. The current TeacherPrint modules include: Speaker Wheel, Statements, Talk Time, Overlaps, Pauses, and Speech Map. The modules can be naviagted using the ribbon menu; it looks like this:

TeacherPrint Building Block & Module

Simultaneous speaking by a Teacher and one or more Students. In the Speaker Wheel, Overlaps are indicated in navy blue. In the unified Speech Map, Overlaps are indicated by darker blue or bluish-green bands.

TeacherPrint Building Block & Module

A length of silence between Statements. Pauses are measured between the Statements of a single Speaker (e.g., two ideas expressed one after another) and between sequential Statements made by different Speakers (e.g., a question and an answer). In the Speaker Wheel, Pauses are indicated in grey. In the Speech Map, Pauses are indicated by white space.

Any vocal contributor in a submitted audio file. Each Speaker is classified as a Teacher or a Student.

TeacherPrint Module

A visual overview of how Teacher Talk, Student Talk, and the Overlaps and Pauses between the two were distributed for your lesson.

TeacherPrint Module

A Statement-by-Statement breakdown of the Teacher Talk and Student Talk in a lesson, distributed over time. The length of each Statement is indicated by the width of its corresponding band. In the divided Speech Map, the length of each Statement is also represented by the size of the circle at the end of the band.

TeacherPrint Module

A continuous vocal expression bounded by Pauses. A Statement may range from a single word to an extended sequence of ideas. In the field of Linguistics, this would be referred to as an “utterance.”

TeacherPrint Building Block

The length or proportion of time that any Student speaks during a lesson. Student Talk Time includes the vocal contributions of all Students, aggregated. In the Speaker Wheel module, Student Talk is presented as a percentage of the lesson as a whole, including Pauses and Overlaps. In the Talk Time module, Student Talk is presented as a percentage of the total Talk in the lesson, excluding Pauses. Student Talk data is always presented in gold.

TeacherPrint Module

The amount of time a Speaker vocalizes, in seconds. Student Talk Time includes the vocal contributions of all Students, aggregated. Throughout the TeacherPrints site, Teacher Talk time is shown in bright blue; Student Talk Time is shown in gold.
