Absolutely nothing! TeacherPrints is a free online application based on open source software. Save your money for classroom supplies!

TeacherPrints can process audio files and generate visualizations about lesson delivery in any oral language (we can’t do signed languages… yet!). However, the dynamic instructional coaching text is currently available only in English and is most consistent with western educational traditions. Localization for other languages, cultures, and educational traditions is on our roadmap for future versions!

For Teachers

No. TeacherPrints provides different types of information about the Teacher Talk and Student Talk in your lesson, as well as how those types of Talk related to each other. Our instructional coaching guides you through understanding the visualizations and identifying aspects of your lesson delivery that you can work on. No judgments, ratings, or scores. Just accurate data analysis and expert advice to help you be the best teacher you can be.

There is no one right way to deliver a lesson, but there are strategies you can employ to get your students engaged and give them the best chance to learn the material well. Some of those strategies are shared through our dynamic coaching text. We encourage you to explore all the links and the sites that host them for ideas that fit well with your instructional style. The more mindful you are about what is happening in your classroom, the easier it will be to find solutions to any challenges you might encounter.

The instructional coaching you get through TeacherPrints is based on more than 50 years of successful teaching experience around the world, from kindergarten classrooms in Japan to rural schools in Malawi and Kenya to cutting edge research universities in the U.S. Our pedagogical experts aren’t strangers we paid for advice. They are dedicated educational professionals who helped to build TeacherPrints from the ground up. They know the hard work that goes into excellent teaching, and they want to help you be the best teacher you can be.

TeacherPrints is intended for personal instructional coaching. This means you can use it on your own and get benefit from it, without sharing the results with anyone else. TeacherPrints is great for generating snapshots of your teaching and helping you be more mindful of how you manage talk in your classroom.

Of course, if you make positive changes in your lesson delivery using TeacherPrints, you may want to share that good news! The TeacherPrints Dashboard is great for this, because it summarizes the analysis of your lesson in a single page. Share it in a professional development group or with an instructional coach for more feedback and ideas.

Yes. However, educational records in the U.S. are protected under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), and recordings of classroom activities typically fall under this rule. To share such recordings with an outside entity (like TeacherPrints), you must first secure permission from the parents or legal guardians of your students. Your school, district, city, or state may also have rules about who must approve the external sharing of classroom recordings.

The good news is that administrators and parents/guardians typically have fewer concerns about audio recordings than video recordings. They are also generally supportive of teachers taking positive steps to develop professionally and improve students’ classroom learning experience. The first step is to talk to your Principal and find out what permissions are needed for your school.

Yes. When you upload an audio file to TeacherPrints, we keep the recording just long enough to convert it into the data we need to create our visualizations, then we delete it. We don’t gather any information that links you or your students to the data, either.

The easiest way is to use a smartphone. If you have an iPhone, you can use the Audio Memos app that is built in. If you have an Android phone, there are a variety of free voice recorder apps available.
